Dating violence is a pattern of harmful behaviors used to exert power and control over a dating partner.

Types of violence can include emotional, verbal, financial, digital, physical, and sexual abuse.

Each type is serious, and no one deserves to be the target of any form.

Many people assume that “abuse” means physical violence must be happening, but that’s not always the case. Abuse takes many forms — it’s not just physical. By learning about the different types of abuse, you’ll be better able to recognize the warning signs if you or someone you know is ever experiencing dating violence.

Why Do People Stay in Abusive Relationships?
People who have never experienced abuse often wonder why a person wouldn’t “just leave” an abusive relationship, but breaking up can be more complicated than it seems. There are many reasons why people stay in abusive relationships. If you know a friend who is in an unhealthy or abusive relationship, support them by asking what you can do to help and letting them know that you are there for them.
